Alliance Boots today has published its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Report 2011/12 for the year ended 31 March 2012.

As a healthcare company, CSR is integral to Alliance Boots business, inherent in its values and forms a natural part of its culture. Working every day to contribute positively to the communities the Group serves, long-term partnerships continue to play a pivotal role in its CSR agenda.

In June 2011, Alliance Boots announced the roll-out of a pan-European partnership with the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Charitable Trust, through which it has committed to raise €5 million by 2016 to establish a ‘Biobank’ for the study and development of cancer treatments.

In addition, the Group takes a holistic approach in its support in the fight against cancer; from helping people affected by the disease through its ongoing collaboration between Macmillan Cancer Support and Boots UK; to working to find new ways to fight and treat cancer through the Group’s partnership with the EORTC. This approach means that Alliance Boots is supporting the fight against cancer on all levels: in diagnosis, treatment and support.

On the environment, Alliance Boots is determined to be a leader and an example to others in addressing climate change. The Group pursues many practical activities that contribute to the overall reduction of its carbon footprint. Additionally, the Group encourages waste reduction and an increase in recycling, and during 2011/12, 12 of the Group's principal businesses now recycle 50% or more of their waste.

As part of its CSR programme, Alliance Boots has a ‘champion’ in most of its businesses with responsibility for defining and delivering local CSR priorities and targets in line with the Group’s overall objectives. The teams across the Group are at heart of this commitment and have embraced initiatives and activities with enthusiasm.

This year, Alliance Boots has also taken further strides to develop and improve its CSR reporting. The Report’s CSR data is independently assured by KPMG and the Group has also included a critical commentary on CSR report from Tomorrow’s Company. The report has been compiled using the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) G3 Sustainability Reporting Guidelines and cover the substantive issues relevant to the Group.
