Following the successful completion of a preliminary phase and the enthusiasm shown by its teams and businesses, Alliance Boots will commence the roll-out of its international partnership with the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Charitable Trust at the beginning of the new financial year (1 April 2012 - 31 March 2013). Alliance Boots has committed to raising €5 million by 2016 to support the creation and funding of a Biobank for colorectal cancer and later a platform for blood sampling to enable genetic profiling.
Further to the announcement of the partnership last year, Alliance Boots and the EORTC Charitable Trust have completed the operational, legal and financial set-up and created awareness amongst employees and key stakeholders. Teams across Alliance Boots are now actively engaged in the efforts to meet the fundraising target through national and local initiatives such as charity raffles and product sales. Businesses have also launched plans for larger events, some of which involve manufacturers and suppliers, such as a 36-hour non-stop football match and a bike ride across the UK.
To launch the roll-out the project, Alliance Boots held a joint press conference with the EORTC today in Brussels, in the presence of HRH Princess Astrid (Honorary President of the EORTC Charitable Trust).
Speaking at the event, Stefano Pessina, Executive Chairman of Alliance Boots, said: “At Alliance Boots, corporate social responsibility is integral to our business, inherent in our values and forms a natural part of our culture. As a healthcare and truly international company, we feel very passionate about playing an active role in the fight against cancer, which is a key global health challenge. We are very committed to making our partnership with the EORTC Charitable Trust a huge success and proud to be involved in this worthy cause.”
Ornella Barra, Chairman of the Social Responsibilities Committee of Alliance Boots, added: “This corporate social responsibility venture is part of our Group’s wider commitment to support cancer sufferers and directly complements, for example, the collaboration with Macmillan Cancer Support in the UK and similar projects in other countries. Our corporate social responsibility model encourages local accountability and I am convinced that the enthusiasm already shown by our teams is very promising for the future of this partnership.”
