Alliance Boots today confirms that it is in discussions concerning the first major project within the Nottingham Enterprise Zone (NEZ) in partnership with the Department for Communities and Local Government Nottingham City Council and D2N2, the Local Enterprise Partnership for Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham and Nottinghamshire.
In March 2011, the Alliance Boots site in Beeston, Nottingham, was awarded Enterprise Zone status by the Government, following a visit by the UK Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister. Enterprise Zones are designated areas with incentives to encourage the creation of new businesses, which will contribute to the growth of local and national economies.
Today’s announcement is expected to result in the redevelopment of site infrastructure, including land preparation and remediation activities, to help ready it for commercial use. The programme will also include a number of public infrastructure works.
The works, subject to ongoing discussions in respect of detailed specifications and necessary planning approvals, will commence during 2013, providing job opportunities for local communities across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. The proposed improvements to the site are expected to further strengthen its position as a centre for innovation and product development in the health, beauty and wellness sphere, and help to attract new businesses to the Nottingham area.
Stefano Pessina, Executive Chairman, Alliance Boots, comments: “The Nottingham Enterprise Zone represents a unique opportunity to create a new innovation platform that will assist in the future development of the UK’s health, beauty and wellness market. As Alliance Boots continues to grow its international presence, Nottingham is as always extremely important to us. Our proposed investment in the Enterprise Zone further illustrates our commitment to the region and the UK as a whole.”
Notes to editors:
Alex Gourlay, Chief Executive, Health & Beauty Division, Alliance Boots, added: “We are very pleased to be working with the Government and local authorities on this opportunity for Nottingham. The creation of the Enterprise Zone builds on Boots strong heritage of innovation in Nottingham, and is good news for attracting new commerce to the local area.”
Mark Prisk, Local Growth Minister, said: "I'm delighted to see the Nottingham Enterprise Zone get underway, demonstrating how the public and private sectors can work together to create a stronger future for UK business and local industry. The new Enterprise Zone is set to become a firm stronghold for UK PLC right in the heart of England, with the support it brings for new businesses creating jobs and boosting growth across the country."
Councillor Collins, Nottingham City Council, said: “It is 20 months since the Prime Minister announced Enterprise Zone status for this site and we have spent that time working with partners to secure today’s significant funding proposals. Regeneration, economic growth and stability are absolute priorities for Nottingham City Council and today’s news demonstrates very clearly our plans are working. We are heading in the right direction and by establishing and working closely with such key partnership groupings we have a dynamic blend of skills and entrepreneurship to achieve our aim of rejuvenating our economy and creating employment.”
