This Saturday, June 5, is World Environment Day, a United Nations initiative that encourages worldwide awareness and action to protect our environment – and an observance that marks WBA’s belief that a healthy planet is essential for healthy communities.

WBA’s latest Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Report outlines this commitment, detailing our progress in reducing energy consumption and emissions, reducing waste and the use of plastic, and increasing re-use and recycling. The report also highlights WBA’s ongoing work with suppliers to help ensure ingredients are traceable and raw materials are sourced in the most environmentally appropriate way.

Earlier this year, Boots UK joined leading retailers in the British Retail Consortium’s Climate Change Roadmap and announced its commitment to be completely carbon neutral by 2040, 10 years prior to the government’s legislation.

In the U.S., WBA’s global headquarters in Deerfield, Ill., currently has 39,000 bees in an on-campus hive, which supports pollination efforts in a three-mile radius around campus, thanks to Walgreens’ partnership with Alveole, a Montreal-based organization that specializes in urban beekeeping.

In addition, WBA’s environmental sustainability business resource groups in the U.S., UK and Asia are helping team members learn more about the company’s CSR commitments and understand how they can turn their eco-intentions into action and make a positive impact in their communities.

“A healthy planet is essential for healthy communities to thrive, and we must all play our part in lessening our impact on the environment, however small this might be,” says Richard Ellis, VP corporate responsibility, WBA. “At WBA, our wider CSR agenda is more urgent because of COVID, not less so.”

To mark this year’s World Environment Day, WBA is reflecting on the progress it’s making in its CSR commitments. Here are some of the highlights:
